SHORTS BOYS | These are the men, women and boys who worked for Short Brothers

PATRICK BRYANT... by Maughan Bryant

“My father and uncle both worked at Shorts, the latter throughout the war. He told me stories of being a ‘Fire Warden’ and the bombing of the factory along The Esplanade.

I can remember being on his shoulders in the early 50’s and seeing flying boats moored in front of the Rochester site [Seaplane Works] and I think of them taking off. I was under five at the time.

Before he died my uncle gave me a set of tools and a toolbox that he had made as an apprentice at Shorts. He told me that it was part of the course to get his ‘letters’.”
